MEFISTO INFODAY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MEFISTO INFODAY meeting, the final project event, was successfully held online on 23 April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an opportunity to promote and share MEFISTO results and outcomes with port authorities, as well as directors and administrative staff from OGS and INGV research institutions, and to thank both internal and external collaborators on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was very engaging, with six oral presentations covering all the project steps MEFISTO went through, from the proposal rationale to the main scientific findings and outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026and the project dissemination will continue at the next EGU General Assembly (3\u20138 May 2026), where MEFISTO will be promoted by the substitute PI, Dr. Gianluca Lazzaro, through a poster displaying the results of the passive acoustic analyses! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay tuned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>26\/09\/2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.sif.it\/activities\/congress\/111\">MEFISTO @ 111th national Congress of the Italian Physical Society (SIF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEFISTO partecipated in the \u201c111<sup>th<\/sup> national Congress of the Italian Physical Society (SIF)\u201d, held in Palermo (Italy) from 22 to 26 September 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the event, Dr. Agostino Semprebello, technologist from INGV, gave an oral presentation on the passive acoustic investigations conducted in the hydrothermal field of Panarea island, illustrating how to estimate gas emission rates using inverse modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the EGU General Assembly, this conference provided another valuable opportunity to disseminate href=\"https:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU25\/EGU25-10882.html\">MEFISTO @ European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first results of the MEFISTO project were presented by PI Matteo Bazzaro at the EGU General Assembly 2025 (27 April &#8211; 2 May 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an oral presentation, Dr. Bazzaro explained the objectives of MEFISTO, illustrated the multidisciplinary approach of the project to study methane emissions in the two areas under investigation and discussed the preliminary results, which aroused great interest among the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The international conference was a great opportunity to publicise the project to the scientific community and a lot of positive feedback was taken home!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter href=\"https:\/\/participants.wepal.nl\/documents\/download.php?folderid=150&amp;file=WEPAL-QUASIMEME-BookOfAbstracts-Workshop-OA-2025.pdf&amp;path=\/W-Q-WORKSHOP-2025-OceanAcidification\">MEFISTO @ Quasimeme Workshop<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEFISTO participated in the Quasimeme workshop on Quality Assurance for Inorganic Carbon System Measurements in the context of Ocean Acidification Monitoring and Marine CO<sub>2<\/sub> Removal Technologies held at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK (18-20\/03\/2025).<br>During the event, Dr. Vincenzo Alessandro Laudicella, technologist from OGS, presented the results of the carbonate system analyses from the first three MEFISTO sampling campaigns in the form of a poster, which was met with great interest by the international researchers and delegates attending the workshop.<br>The event proved to be a great networking opportunity where state-of-the-art carbonate system analysis techniques, new instruments and software were discussed and presented.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"http:\/\/mefisto.pa.ingv.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-03-18-at-18.21.37_5c03d621-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-391\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>31\/01\/2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ogs.it\/en\/news\/launch-mefisto-prin-pnrr-project-study-natural-ch4-emissions-marine-coastal-environment\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ogs.it\/en\/news\/launch-mefisto-prin-pnrr-project-study-natural-ch4-emissions-marine-coastal-environment\">Launch of MEFISTO, the PRIN PNRR project to study natural CH4 emissions in the marine coastal environment<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project&#8217;s kick off meeting was successfully held online on 26 January 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEFISTO, coordinated by OGS and developed in cooperation with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology &#8211; INGV, is financially supported by the European union through the &#8220;Fund for the National Research Programme and Research Projects of Significant National Interest (PRIN)&#8221; in the framework of the NRRP &#8211; Nex Generation EU Mission 4 &#8220;Education and Research&#8221; to define the actual contribution of the marine coastal areas to the atmospheric methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>) budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scarcity of data concerning CH<sub>4<\/sub>&nbsp;fluxes in coastal areas negatively affects the exact calculation of this greenhouse gas atmospheric budget, whose accuracy is vital for verifying potential reductions in emissions linked to the adoption of effective climate mitigation strategies. In fact, CH4 released from coastal seafloor can escape directly into the atmosphere by rapidly bypassing the water column through bubble transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next two years, MEFISTO will specifically focus on reducing uncertainties in the estimation of natural CH<sub>4<\/sub>&nbsp;fluxes in such environments. The study, combining classical physical, chemical, and molecular methods with innovative hydroacoustic approaches, will be aimed to assess which forcings favour or prevent the release of this gas into the atmosphere in two Italian shallow coastal areas: a seepage zone recently identified in the Gulf of Trieste and centred on the Bardelli outcrop (Northern Adriatic Sea) and the hydrothermal vent area off the Panarea Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Southern Tyrrhenian Sea).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"717\" data-id=\"188\" src=\"http:\/\/mefisto.pa.ingv.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot_KOM_MEFISTO_20240126_fixed.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-188\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>23\/04\/2026 MEFISTO INFODAY The MEFISTO INFODAY meeting, the final project event, was successfully held online on 23 April 2026.
